PSV Triumphant in Johan Cruijff Schaal

The Johan Cruijff Schaal is played annually by the winners of two trophies (the KNVB Cup and the Eredivisie) from the previous season, which this time meant PSV Eindhoven facing Feyenoord at De Kuip.

What a match it was for PSV’s recent signing, Noa Lang! The Dutch national scored the winning goal in the 79th minute, striking from inside the box after being dealt a swift cross by Ismael Saibari. Until this moment it was difficult to predict what the final result might be, since the possession was fairly even and both teams had goals dismissed as off-side (one of which, by Feyenoord’s winger, Igor Paixão, was a brilliant shot that flew past the PSV keeper, Walter Daniel Benítez, with such speed that he did not have the time to attempt a save).

This is the second year in a row that PSV have been victorious in the Johan Cruijff Schaal, and there could be no more fitting trophy to inaugurate the run of their new manager, Peter Bosz, who in an interview once described the enormous influence Cruijff exerted upon his own strategic approach to football: “With some friends, we more or less wrote our own book. Every article, all his (Cruijff’s) interviews were in there. We collected them and tried to organise them – this is for attacking, this is how you defend, this is tactical.”

Available now on our website is a collection of shirts worn and signed by the match’s starting 11 PSV players!
