A century of football at Vetkampstraat
The world of football knows many legendary stadiums. From the San Siro in Milan, to Anfield in Liverpool to Camp Nou in Barcelona, legendary football stadiums are scattered across the globe. De Adelaarshorst, located in Deventer and home of the Go Ahead Eagles, might be lesser known to those aforementioned, but it is a no less iconic stadium.
On May 2nd, the club celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the Vetkampstraat, the road on which the home of Go Ahead Eagles’ can be found. Despite the club celebrating the 100 year anniversary in 2021 the first game was actually played at the venue on the 2nd of May 1920, meaning the stadium is in fact 101 years old. Go Ahead decided to postpone the celebrations of reaching this milestone due to the cancellation of the 2019/20 season of the Eerste Divisie, the second-highest tier in Dutch football, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
To commemorate Vetkampstaat reaching a century of hosting Go Ahead, the club created a set of very special retro shirts. The design of these shirts is based on the kits that were worn during the very first game in the Adelaarshorst, a 3-0 win against VOC Rotterdam. The club, in partnership with Hummel, have succeeded in creating an extraordinary shirt that truly captivates the full emotion of the stadium’s long-lasting legacy. Over the 100 years that Go Ahead Eagles have played in the Adelaarshorst, the club has known many successful seasons and has been crowned champion on three separate occasions on the Vetkampstraat.
The kits bear the club colours with a yellow stripe through the middle and red sides and sleeves. The shirts also feature a large collar and have black buttons to close the front, a nod to the original kit worn more than a century ago.
Go Ahead’s crest is also replaced with the beautiful black coat of arms of an eagle sitting on a football, that normally located in the middle of the crest itself.
These limited edition shirts have proven immensely popular with fans and collectors alike with the initial 192 kits quickly selling out at such a pace. Due to the enormous demand a further 500 shirts were produced which also quickly sold out.
Fans and collectors now have one final chance to get their hands on these iconic, limited-edition shirts, as all shirts that were worn during Go Ahead’s 5-1 victory over Helmond Sport will be up for grabs in the online auction.
The eagles shirts will land on the MatchWornShirt platform on May 5th at 19:00 (CET).
