UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife united for La Palma!

There are many football games that ignite strong passions among the fans, and many of football’s greatest derbies are played in Spain. Real Madrid versus Barcelona is of course the most popular one, but some games are just as important as el clasico to local supporters. One of these games is surely the Canary Islands Derby.

Mostly played in the second or third tier of Spanish football, the Canary Islands Derby pits the archipelago’s biggest islands against each other in a thrilling spectacle which is considered by many among the fiercest derbies in football. But today, UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife are all about unity. In order to support their neighboring island La Palma, the two sides have decided to both contribute to help those affected by the volcanic eruption.

The proceeds raised by Los Canariones’ game against Ponferradina and by Chicharreros’ bout against Almerìa will be in fact donated to the competent authorities in an effort to save lives and bring some peace to the disaster-hit island.
