Pumas celebrate 60 years in Liga BBVA MX!
It is every football team’s ambition to play against the world’s very best athletes and showcase their talents on the big stage. With hundreds of leagues around the world, making it to the highest level of any national competition can already be considered as an incredible accomplishment. But becoming one of Mexico’s most iconic clubs and competing in a league as demanding as Liga BBVA MX for 60 years straight gives the word “extraordinary” a whole new meaning!
Originally an amateur team of students, the club was founded in 1954 under the name Club Deportivo Universidad in Mexico City. After competing in the Segunda División for over 8 years, the team finally managed to achieve their objective and book their spot in the Primera División after defeating Club Cataluña de Torreón in the grand final! Seven Liga MX championships, one Copa MX title and two Campeón de Campeones championships later, Pumas currently sit as one of Mexico’s most successful and decorated teams!
After an exciting first half of the season, Pumas managed to reach the semifinals of Apertura despite a slow start to the season. Taking on a dangerous Toluca squad in their first match of the Clausura, “los auriazules” debuted a special kit in commemoration of their 60th anniversary in the league. The limited-edition uniform pays homage to the humble beginnings of the club and features a number of exclusive details and distinctive features!
