The first ever Women’s Intercontinental Derby was one for the ages!

Last week we witnessed history being made as Fenerbahçe’s and Galatasaray’s Women’s Football Teams faced off in what was the first ever female Intercontinental Derby! The friendly game took place at Galatasaray’s iconic “Nef Stadium” with thousands of supporters fervidly cheering on their favourite side throughout the entire 90 minutes.

Albeit extremely exciting from a football point of view, the scope of the derby spanned well beyond the realm of sports. In line with United Nation’s “Orange the World” campaign, the two teams used this opportunity to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. Prior to the start of the game, both teams stepped on the pitch with “No violence against women” banners to express their stance to the thousands of people in attendance.

The match might have finished 7:0 in favour of Fenerbahçe, but regardless of the result, the match marked an important milestone in the fight against gender-based violence. After the game, players from both sides expressed their joint enthusiasm for the historic occasion with the athletes highlighting the importance of putting the clubs' differences aside and uniting behind social causes that could have a meaningful impact extending way beyond the world of sports and politics.

Fenerbahçe’s match-worn and signed shirts from the legendary derby are now available on our platform. Support the “Orange the World” initiative and bring home a piece of history by clicking on the link below!
