The record breaking Ozil ceremony shirt!

The end of January 2021 was a period of broken records for MatchWornShirt. On the 23rd January, Neymar’s shirt, that he wore in the match against Angers SCO, sold for a whopping €13,000. However, Neymar’s kit did not stand a chance against the amazing supporters of Fenerbahçe, as the shirts of Mesut Özil’s presentation at the club, went under the hammer. Özil is a German national, with 92 caps for ‘Die Mannschaft’, but he has Turkish roots, which is why his move to Fenerbahçe feels like the return of a lost son.

Özil first made headlines in Germany, where he played for Bundesliga sides Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen and was good for 37 assists in 101 matches. This gained him a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. In the Spanish capital he flourished and became on of the best number 10’s at that time. He scored 27 goals and delivered 80 assists during his four seasons at ‘Los Blancos’. In the summer of 2013 Özil made the switch to English side Arsenal, where he quickly became a key player in the Gunners’ midfield. However, after 7 seasons in London, in which he won four FA cups and became a World Cup Winner with Germany, the strong bond he had with the club and its fans seemed to have abruptly deteriorated. Consequently, Özil made a hugely debated transfer to Turkish side Fenerbahçe SK.

For this special occasion, the three shirts that were used for the presentation of ‘The Assist King’ in Istanbul, went under the hammer on MatchWornShirt. After a thrilling bidding war between two Fenerbahçe super fans, the signed home shirt eventually sold for the incredible amount of €26,000. This is double the amount that was paid for the previous recordholder, Neymar’s PSG shirt.
